About Belize & Manta

Whether this is your first visit or a return trip, you will unquestionably agree that Belize provides many gifts to vacationers from around the world. From our pristine tropical rainforest to the largest living barrier reef in the world, Belize is every traveler’s dream. Often referred to as “Mother Nature’s Best Kept Secret,” Belize is home to a wealth of natural wonders offering unrivaled diving, untouched coral patches, dense jungle, and an underground Mayan world rich with history.

But what makes Belize unique is simple: its people. As a small nation with a little over 390,000 residents, Belize is a melting pot of various cultures. With its British colonial ties, Carib settlers, Central American neighbors, and more recent immigrants from around the world, you will surely meet friendly locals with interesting stories. Although most cultures have their own native tongue, English is the official language of Belize, making it easy for tourists to navigate and form a connection with the locals.

As a Belizean owned and managed resort, Manta Island Resort is staffed with wonderful team members, many of whom have been with us over the years. We strive to provide the most personalized customer service with authentic Belizean hospitality. At any point during your stay feel free to ask any of our team members questions or requests.

We invite you to enjoy the simplicity of island life as you are surrounded by nature’s beauty. You will shortly see why Manta Island is such a blissful location — and we hope that you will return to see us again. Remember, you are only a stranger until you arrive.

As in all tropical climates, mosquitoes and sand flies are prevalent. We attempt to curtail the sand fly activity on the island (the sand flies are less active during times of high wind). If you are sensitive to biting insects, it is very advisable to use Deet-based insect repellent on the island as needed. You may also want to use Hydrocortisone cream, Benadryl Tablets, Baby oil or Calamine lotion.

Drinking: While the tap water technically is safe to drink, we do not recommend that you do so. Manta Island Resort provides purified drinking water in all of our rooms. Please stay hydrated.

Belize is a safe country; however, like everywhere else, you should exercise caution. Do not wear flashy jewelry and carry large amounts of cash. Do not travel on dark roads in the nighttime.

The currency of Belize is the Belize Dollar (BZ$). Belize widely accepts US Currency. The dollar notes are accepted countrywide at a universal exchange rate of BZ$2 to US$1, but keep in mind that the notes must not be mutilated in any way or they may not be accepted. Please note that US coins are not accepted. We suggest that you bring smaller denominations as all change will be issued back to you in Belize dollars.

Most hotels, resorts, restaurants, and tour operators accept US currency in form of notes, traveler’s checks, and credit cards. Manta Island Resort accepts MasterCard, Visa, Discover, and American Express. You may also use the ATM with your international credit or debit cards to withdraw cash while in Belize. ATMs can be found in the International Airport in Belize City. Kindly be advised that all charges to credit cards will be processed in Belize dollars.

Like Manta Island Resort, most companies in Belize will not be held responsible for any currency rate of exchange variances applied by banks or for any international processing fees that may be charged by your credit card company.

English is the official language of Belize, although a number of dialects are spoken among the country’s 350,000 citizens. This is the result of Belize’s rich and multicultural heritage.

In Dangriga Town you may hear the locals speak their native tongue Garifuna; however a majority of the locals speak English as well.

Time observed year round is the same as United States Central Standard Time (CST). Belize does not observe Daylight Saving Time, which means that we do not “spring forward ” 1 hour during the spring. Therefore during the spring, we are one hour behind CST and during the fall we are in sync with CST.

Belize uses 110-volt alternating electric current, the same standard as the US. If you are here from the US, converters are not necessary.

Our package rates do not include gratuities. We have developed a suggested gratuities guide in response to guest feedback. Please bear in mind that it is meant only as a guide for you. The actual amount is left totally to your discretion and dependent upon the quality of service. We suggest between USD$450-$650 per couple for a four to seven night stay for the entire staff. Operating Manta Island is a team effort which involves a lot of behind-the-scenes staff along with our awesome front line personnel and we believe that everyone plays an important role in your stay with us. Should you choose to leave a gratuity this is left completely to your discretion and is based on the quality of service you receive. There is nothing too small or big and anything is appreciated. Because we are all inclusive property, we advise against tipping individually on a daily basis so that you do not have to worry about carrying cash/credit cards with you while you are enjoying your vacation. Instead, we ask that if you choose to leave a gratuity, you leave a general tip amount on your signed invoice and pay for it with cash or credit card at checkout. Because it is a team effort, these gratuities are pooled every two weeks and distributed by the accounting department. If you do feel the need to leave individual tips, we strongly suggest that you finalize your tips at the front desk upon checkout where you are able to write your specific instructions regarding your tip amount and how you would like it to be distributed along with your signature. Utilizing the front desk as the contact point is essential to ensuring that tips will be sent to our accounting department, which manages proper and transparent distribution through the staff’s bank accounts.

Because Manta is located off the coast of Belize, we supply our own clean water through reverse osmosis and supply electricity via our generator.

In order to conserve energy, water, and heating gas:

  • Please place the towels you would like to have washed on the bathroom floor when you need clean towels. This will prevent us from washing towels unnecessarily.
  • Towels not placed on the floor will be folded and replaced on the respective racks. If you find you need more than two of each type of towel, please let our housekeeping department or Front Desk know as we are happy to provide extra towels.
  • Kindly turn off all lights and air conditioner when not in use or prior to leaving your room. When using the air conditioner, please check that all of the windows are closed tightly. Please report noisy or leaky faucets and/or toilets.

A feature attraction of diving in Belize, especially for divers with an appreciation of geographical phenomena, is the opportunity to explore the famed Blue Hole. It is one of the most astounding dive sites to be found anywhere on earth. Located right in the center of Lighthouse Reef, it’s a large, almost perfectly circular hole approximately one-quarter of a mile (.4 km) across. Inside this hole, the water is 425 feet (129 m) deep and it is the depth of water which gives the deep blue color that causes such structures throughout the world to be known as “blue holes.” Except for two narrow channels, the reef surrounds the hole. The hole itself is the opening to a system of caves and passageways that penetrate this undersea mountain. In various places, massive limestone stalactites hang down from what was once the ceiling of air-filled caves before the end of the last Ice Age, creating a cathedral look. When the ice melted, the sea level rose, flooding the caves.

Since the Blue Hole dive requires a minimum depth of 100ft, only certified advanced and experienced divers should attempt this dive. Due to the depth of this dive, bottom time is limited to about 8 minutes, and good buoyancy skills are required to do the mandatory safety stop.

For those interested in snorkeling, the Belize Blue Hole Tour can also be offered as a Snorkeling Tour.

Tour details such as timetables, location, etc., will be confirmed upon arrival with the Front Desk.

Level: Advanced
If you are a certified advanced diver but do not have any dives logged recently, you might be prompted to do a refresher dive where the divemaster will monitor your abilities and how your body reacts while diving in deeper water. He/she will then determine if you are able to participate in this dive.

What to bring: Dive certification card, sunscreen, hat, swim/dive wear, underwater camera, Dramamine, and power/granola bars

Pricing: See a la carte page for pricing.
